On April 27th a massive F4 tornado ripped through Tuscaloosa, Alabama. A few weeks later, our leaders got together and made the decision to cancel church on Memorial Day weekend to go help.
14 of us loaded up in two 15 passenger vans on a Friday after work, drove all night, and arrived at a church in Tuscaloosa early Saturday morning. After a shower and some breakfast, we headed to our work site. We weren’t prepared for what we were about to see…

We were blessed to work with one family, the Anderson’s, whom God spared in a little 2ft x 5ft closet. They lost everything… Their greatest need wasn’t food, but rather clothing and other necessities. The vision of East Coast is to “build a bridge and bring a voice for the gospel”.
As a church we were able to give them a $500 Walmart gift card as well as a few other things for their children. Upon giving the gift card to the father, we were able to share about the greatest gift, forgiveness in Christ!
Words can’t express what the 14 of us saw & experienced that weekend.
- It gave us a humble understanding of the brevity of life. The house directly behind the one we were working on took a fatal hit, killing a grandmother and a grandchild.
- It gave us a better appreciation for the things we have. I never want to complain about what I have, such as a house and a family.
- It gave us a better understanding of the joy in serving others. God was so gracious to use us to help a family in need. That’s humbling. Pouring yourself out truly fills you with JOY!
